Are You A Mindful Business?

What does it mean to be mindful in the business sense?  The word “mindful” evokes the thought of moral, courteous and conscientious behavior.  Certainly these are important components to being mindful.  Successful entrepreneurs know that ethical actions are only half the story.

Do you make business decisions by objectively comparing an array of possible solutions or are you usually sure what the right answer is?  Do you use accurate and relevant information to make decisions or do you shoot from the hip?  Do you have systems in place that are capable of easily gathering important information or do you have to dig?  Do your systems allow your business to operate smoothly and profitably or are you constantly putting out fires and starved for cash?  Have you assembled a capable management team with strengths that complement your own or do you try to do most things yourself?

If you answered yes to the second half of any of these questions, you have room to act more consciously in managing your business.  Answering yes to the first half of these questions does not mean you’re home free.  Being mindful is a daily, moment by moment act that requires discipline and persistence.  In other words, you have to keep working at it.

Very true - often it is the "new" entrepreneur who reacts on gut and not facts. It may be good for some decisions, but to be a mindful business it really is important to have systems in place that collect the important information for you, so that you can still make decisions quickly but with the facts behind you.

Excellent discussion point, Steve!

For me, the concept of "mindfulness" goes straight to the heart of how we choose to live our lives. Mindfulness is all about making conscious choices, not just following protocol because "that's how we've always done it".

Falling back on routinized, unconscious behavior is a recipe for death in the business world since, in the words of Bob Dylan, "He not busy being born is busy dying." If we're not constantly challenging the status quo and experimenting with new procedures and perspectives, how in the world are we supposed to succeed in the marketplace??

Thank you for this valuable reminder! Entrepreneurs from around the world are waking up to this new Conscious, Mindful environment.

The word "mindfulness" is synonymous with paying attention, being alert, being aware of everything going on inside yourself, as well as in your environment, at all waking hours. The process of enlightenment is about making the unconscious, conscious. Sometimes that is a painful and difficult process. At times, it is easier to sleepwalk, or operate in dream mode (as in watching movies, being engrossed in a good book), or to zone out. Mindfulness requires the sometimes hard work of staying aware.

I dig this post.
